Permanent Residency &
Citizenship

After arriving in Canada as an immigrant, new permanent residents of Canada will receive their permanent residence card. The permanent residence card can be renewed every five years, and immigrants need a valid PR card to return to Canada if they travel overseas. In order to have their PR card renewed, permanent residents must meet some eligibility criteria.

After three years of being a permanent resident of Canada and meeting some specific eligibility criteria, permanent residents can apply to become Canadian citizens.
