Canada is one of the most popular destinations in the world for international students—welcoming over half a million new students each year. The country offers high-quality education, a safe and inclusive society, and the possibility of future immigration pathways. However, most foreign nationals must obtain a study permit before beginning their academic programs in Canada.
A study permit is an official document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that authorizes a foreign national to study at a designated learning institution (DLI). It is different from a visa. A visa (or eTA) allows you to enter Canada, while a study permit allows you to study once you arrive.
In general, if your program of study is longer than six months, you need a study permit. If your program is six months or shorter, you may be able to study in Canada without a study permit—provided you have a valid visitor visa or electronic travel authorization (eTA).
Who Needs a Study Permit?
Most international students who intend to study in Canada for more than six months are required to hold a valid study permit.
You need a study permit if:
– You are enrolling in a program at a college, university, secondary school, or other DLI that is longer than six months
– You plan to work part-time while studying or apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) afterward
– You are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
You may be exempt from needing a study permit if:
– Your program is six months or less
– You are a family member of a foreign representative or military personnel
– You hold certain special statuses under international agreements
Eligibility Requirements
To apply for a study permit, you must meet the following criteria:
– Letter of Acceptance from a DLI
– Proof of financial support
– Clear criminal record
– Good health
– Proof of ties to your home country
For minors studying in Canada, a custodian declaration form may also be required.
The Application Process
Step 1: Obtain a Letter of Acceptance from a DLI
Step 2: Gather required documents including passport, financial proof, and any additional forms
Step 3: Apply online or via a Visa Application Centre
Step 4: Pay application and biometrics fees
Step 5: Provide biometrics and attend a medical exam (if required)
Step 6: Wait for a decision and receive Letter of Introduction and visa/eTA if approved
Conditions of a Study Permit
Study permit holders must:
– Remain enrolled at their DLI
– Make progress in their studies
– Comply with terms on the permit
– Work part-time (up to 24 hours/week) if permitted
– Renew their study permit before it expires if continuing studies
